I have thoroughly enjoyed the Masterclass.com series by Chris Voss on The Art of Negotiating. Chris is a former FBI hostage negotiator who offers lessons on negotiating based on his personal experience and insight.
I found his thoughts on how he approaches the act of negotiating to be particularly enlightening. We negotiate with others every day, and the importance of being an effective negotiator cannot be understated. It literally shapes who we are as people.
Chris’ description of negotiation is along these lines: the adversary is not the other person, but rather the situation in which the different sides find themselves. Negotiation is about different people facing different aspects of the same problem. The other person is therefore to be viewed as your counterpart. By adopting this perspective, you enable yourself to better work with the other person to solve the problem together.
