Torts

A civil wrong committed against a person which serves as the grounds for a lawsuit. There are three categories of torts: intentional, negligent and strict liability. An example of an intentional is when a person intentionally hits another person. An example of a negligent tort is causing an accident by not obeying safety regulations. An example of a strict liability tort is liability for a dog bite.

Tort law focuses on providing relief for damages incurred and to dissuade others from committing similar offenses. Typical damages recovered for torts are: loss of earnings capacity, medical expenses, and pain and suffering. Invasion of privacy and personal injury are considered torts.
